Founded in 2003 by Santa Anzo, the Uganda International Fashion week has generated much interest and has been described as one of the most prestigious fashion events on the nation’s social calendar returning with a sixth (6th) edition in a three (3) day cultural and art explosion at Serena Hotel Kampala. The fashion week will mainly focus on ‘The Business Behind Fashion’, which according to the organizers, will magnify the potential of fashion as a vehicle for economic development in Africa.
It will be hosted by ARAPAPA by Santa Anzo in association with South Africa’s Department of Arts and Culture. Addressing journalists on July 22 at the Serena Hotel, Anzo said fashion is a multi-billion industry just like agriculture, oil and gas, among others.
Anzo said, “UIFW is at the forefront of causing socio-economic change in Uganda by creating activations of partnerships that promote the fashion and textile industry.”
In addition to the runway showcases, UIFW will comprise interactive seminars, networking, mentorship and master class sessions. It will bring together some of Africa’s finest designers including four South Africans and our home-grown talent; Fatumah Asha, Stella Atal, Abbas Kai, Paula Butagira and Arapapa by Santa Anzo.
Claire Mugabi, the Marketing Manager at Uganda Tourism Board said, “Tourism is no longer about people coming to see wild animals. They want to experience the culture, the cuisine and the fashion. We are glad UIFW is taking a lead in fashion tourism.
